The Old Grist Mill and What It Means to Keep It Standing
There is a mill house in Smithtown that has been doing the quiet work of standing still while everything around it changed. It is the kind of building you drive past for years before you learn what it actually was, and once you know, you notice it every time.
Newsday has a piece on the family who owns it and the work of keeping an old structure like this from slipping away. Old mill buildings do not survive by accident. Somebody has to want them to.
Smithtown has a handful of these markers scattered through it, easy to miss if you are not looking. Worth a slow drive sometime, if you have not made a point of finding them.
