Kings Park Landfill Truck Yard Plan Heads to December
The old Steck and Philbin dump site on Old Northport Road in Kings Park is still at the center of a long running zoning fight. A builder called Cox & Sons wants to put a freight depot and a yard for outdoor equipment and materials on the property, which sits on land zoned for light manufacturing and is also part of the state's cleanup program for contaminated sites.
At this week's zoning board session, neighbors who have been following the case for months showed up again to say no. The developer has dropped a chunk of the variance requests it first filed, including some tied to parking setbacks and lighting height, but people living nearby say the core problem has not changed: more trucks, more noise, more dust on streets that were not built for it. The town's own planning staff echoed some of that in a report, saying the project is smaller than before but still asking for a lot of relief, and that retaining walls and buffers near homes and recreation areas need another look.
No vote happened. The matter is adjourned to mid December, and the board chairman says he is not sure yet if that will be the meeting where things get decided. Newsday will likely have more once the updated plans surface.
