Cold Spring Harbor takes its name straight from the source: cold freshwater springs that still flow through the area. That water once ran mills and fed a working port, and by the mid nineteenth century this was a whaling community. When whaling collapsed in the 1860s, the town did not fold up. It turned into a resort, built around a run of hotels, and that instinct for reinvention is worth knowing if you are trying to understand why the place looks the way it does today.

The twentieth century brought a different kind of name recognition. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory made the name famous, even though the lab itself sits just over the line in Laurel Hollow, Nassau County, not in the Suffolk hamlet itself. That is a detail people mix up constantly, and it matters if you are trying to figure out which town and which taxes you are actually dealing with. The hamlet proper sits in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County, and today functions mainly as a bedroom community for New York City commuters, with a small business strip running along Route 25A as its main street.

The numbers tell you this is a small, settled place. As of the 2020 census there were 3,064 people living here, down from 4,975 in 2000, spread across 975 households and about 1,020 housing units, with a homeowner vacancy rate of just 1.4 percent. Land is limited too: the CDP covers 3.9 square miles total, with a slice of that being water. For open space, Cold Spring Harbor State Park is right here, along with the Uplands Farm Sanctuary run by The Nature Conservancy. One practical note for anyone house hunting: the LIRR Cold Spring Harbor station is not actually in the hamlet, it sits over in neighboring West Hills, so factor in that drive if train access matters to you.
