The story of Port Jefferson Station

Port Jefferson Station carries the name of a railroad, not a person or a family. Before the trains came through, the local Native American name for this area was Comsewogue, and folks also called it Echo for a while. The first colonial settler on record, William Tooker, showed up around 1750. Everything changed in 1873 when the Long Island Rail Road built a line to serve nearby Port Jefferson, and the station itself gave the hamlet the name it still carries today.

For a long stretch after that, this was farming country, plain and simple. The suburban build out did not really start until Nesconset Highway went in during the mid 1950s. That road opened the area up, and by the early 1970s Port Jefferson Station had turned into the suburban hamlet you would recognize now. The hamlet sits in the Town of Brookhaven, in Suffolk County, and covers about 2.6 square miles, all of it land.

The geography here is easy to read because the borders are set by infrastructure, not guesswork. The train tracks on the north side mark the line between Port Jefferson Station and the incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, so the LIRR station itself sits right on that border. Nesconset Highway forms the southern edge, separating the hamlet from Terryville. If you are looking at a property here, check which side of those two lines it falls on, since that tells you whether you are dealing with hamlet services under the Town of Brookhaven or crossing into the incorporated village next door, and it also tells you how close a walk to the train you are actually getting.
