Ronkonkoma, NY real estate market
The story of Ronkonkoma
Ronkonkoma takes its name from the lake next door. Lake Ronkonkoma comes from an Algonquian phrase meaning boundary fishing lake, and the kettle lake itself sits entirely inside the Ronkonkoma CDP, not the neighboring hamlet that shares its name. The CDP covers 8.1 square miles, with a little over 4 percent of that being water, mostly the lake. Two named pockets divide the place locally: Lake Hills, north of the Long Island Expressway and south of the old Motor Parkway, and Lakeland, south of the expressway and bordered by Lakeland County Park and Connetquot River State Park Preserve.
The history here runs through roads and runways. Ronkonkoma was the terminus of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, the first road in the country built just for cars, put together by a group led by William Kissam Vanderbilt II. Long Island MacArthur Airport activated within the hamlet in May 1943 and started commercial passenger service in 1960 with Allegheny Airlines. In 1982 the Town of Islip Foreign Trade Zone opened next to the airport, and as of 2026 it is still the only designated foreign trade zone on Long Island outside New York City. Since 1988 Ronkonkoma has marked the end of electrification on the LIRR Main Line, with the stretch back to Hicksville known as the Ronkonkoma Branch.
That train station is also the center of the newest chapter.
