The story of Farmingville

Farmingville sits in the town of Brookhaven, in Suffolk County, and it actually serves as Brookhaven's town seat. Town Hall itself stands on the east side of Bald Hill. The name is a bit of a joke on the place, since early settlers called this stretch Bald Hills and Mooney Ponds before Farmingville stuck, even though the soil and hills here were never much good for farming. That did not stop the Keibel family from running a 72 acre fruit and vegetable farm from 1950 until 1982, which gives you a sense of how long this was working land before it filled in with houses.

Bald Hill is the geographic anchor of the hamlet, one of the highest points on Long Island, sitting right on the Ronkonkoma Moraine where the glacier that shaped Long Island came to a stop. The Elijah Terry house, built in 1823, still stands next to the Bald Hill Schoolhouse, built in 1850 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At the top of Bald Hill you will find Vietnam Memorial Park, home to a red, white, and blue obelisk monument dedicated on November 11, 1991. The Bald Hill Cultural Center runs an outdoor amphitheater on the same hill, and that spot was a working ski area from 1965 to 1980, which is not something you expect to hear about a place on Long Island.

Getting around is straightforward. Farmingville sits near Long Island MacArthur Airport and the LIRR Ronkonkoma station, with the Medford station also close by, and the hamlet has its own exit off the Long Island Expressway at exit 63. The CDP covers 4.19 square miles, all land, so this is a compact hamlet rather than a sprawling one. For a buyer or seller, that combination of an LIE exit, two nearby LIRR stations, and an airport close at hand is the practical fact to know when you are pricing a commute.

This is leverage. Use it with discipline. Over asking on average does not mean any price works: the homes that clear in 24 days are priced to create competition, not to test the ceiling. Start with what your home is actually worth today.
