Lindenhurst, NY real estate market

Lindenhurst started out as Breslau, named by German settlers who came from that city in Silesia, in what is now Poland. The town got going in 1873 and picked up the Lindenhurst name in 1891. Residents voted to incorporate it as a village in 1923, and it marked its hundredth anniversary as a village in 2023. That is a fair run for a South Shore community, and the paperwork trail is unusually clean if you like knowing exactly what you are buying into.

Geographically it sits on the South Shore of Long Island in the Town of Babylon, in Suffolk County, with the Great South Bay forming its southern edge. The village runs about 10 square miles total, though most of that is land, just over 3.8 square miles, with a sliver of water. It shares borders with Copiague to the west, North Amityville to the northwest, North Lindenhurst to the north, and West Babylon to the east, so you are boxed in by a handful of other Babylon Town hamlets and villages, all under that same township for tax and service purposes.

The bay side geography has its own history worth knowing before you buy. Hurricane Sandy flooded more than half the village's streets on October 30, 2012, with water reaching six feet on the south side of Montauk Highway. Fires broke out during the storm and firefighters from around the Town of Babylon helped contain them. The north side of the village lost power for over a week. For getting around day to day, Lindenhurst has its own stop on the LIRR Babylon Branch, plus Suffolk County Transit bus routes 2 and 10 running along Merrick Road and Montauk Highway. If you are looking south of Montauk Highway, it is worth asking any seller directly about flood history and elevation, since that line through town has mattered before.
