Copiague sits in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County, about 35 miles east of Manhattan and roughly 70 miles west of Montauk Point. It runs about 3.2 square miles, bordered by Amityville to the west, North Amityville to the north, Lindenhurst to the east, and the Great South Bay to the south. South of Montauk Highway the hamlet splits into three distinct peninsulas, and this is the detail that trips people up on paperwork. Amity Harbor in the southwest uses the Amityville Post Office and an 11701 zip. Copiague Harbor in the center has its own Copiague Post Office. American Venice in the southeast runs through the Lindenhurst Post Office with an 11757 zip. Same hamlet, three different mailing addresses depending on which finger of land you are on.

Housing here runs toward owner occupied product. As of the 2010 count there were 7,919 housing units and 82 percent of them were owner occupied, with vacancy under 5 percent. That points to a place built up with single family homes rather than heavy rental turnover, and it has stayed close to fully built out since, with just over 8,000 units on the books by 2020.

For emergency coverage, the Copiague Volunteer Fire Department has served the hamlet since it was founded in 1928. It runs out of two stations, one on Dixon Avenue and one on Great Neck Road, plus a marina post at Tanner Park, and it covers the water side of the hamlet with its own boats and a high water rescue vehicle, which matters given how much of Copiague sits close to the bay. If you are buying near American Venice or Copiague Harbor, confirm your peninsula and post office before you print anything, because the mailing address will not match a simple Town of Babylon default.
